Good morning, friends! It’s Thursday and what a wonderful day it is! Today, we’re going to talk about how mindfulness is a superpower.

“Mindfulness is the ability to know what’s happening in your head at any given moment without getting carried away by it.”

Watch this (two and a half minute) video on how mindfulness is a superpower:

Today’s Challenge

To get this amazing superpower, we need to start with meditation:

1. Find a quiet, comfortable seated position

2. Take deep breaths

3. Focus on the breath*

Unless you’re a Buddhist monk, the focus part will be very challenging. You’ll find thoughts creeping in constantly…did I leave the stove on? I need to buy groceries today. My throat’s a little sore, I definitely have Coronavirus”…you know, the typical things.

So, we’re bringing it back!

Breathing with Anchor Words

When you inhale, say in your mind, “breathe in”

When you exhale, say “breathe out”

When a thought enters, label it “thought”, and re-focus on your breathing

*The guided meditation*

*Find a moment each day to practice breathing with anchor words. Using anchor words like “breathe in”, “breathe out”, or “thought”, not only support the focus to the breath, but allow us to become The Observer to what’s happening within.

We create positive relationships with thoughts (Thoughts as Friends) by identifying them and how they make us feel. With practice, we recognize what’s happening within ourselves on a daily basis, and can choose which actions and reactions we want.

If you play Settlers of Catan, I’m sure you can relate to this guy. Just imagine, with mindful breathing, how many tables could be saved.
