It’s a beautiful Thursday! I hope you’re having a great start to your day. Today we’re going to talk about music and mindfulness! Music can have subconscious effects on our minds and bodies.

A study was done by the American Psychological Association to determine if music had an impact on the stress levels of premature babies. With live music, especially singing, “infants heart rates decreased, sucking behaviors improved, and parents reported decreased stress amongst themselves.”

“Music is made up of rhythm and harmony”- which are sounds we hear everyday. There are things we enjoy hearing and things we can’t stand to listen to. Which sounds do you enjoy listening to?

Putting together music and mindfulness can be extremely powerful. Just the act of listening to music can be a mindful experience…

Today’s Challenge

Pick one or more of these to try and see what you discover!

1. Put on headphones and listen to one song you know will relax you. Find a comfortable position (sitting or lying down) and close your eyes. See where your mind goes. If it wanders, gently bring it back to focus on the song.

2. Sit outside for 5 minutes and just notice the sounds. Is there traffic, feet hitting the pavement, birds chirping? Do these sounds relax you or do something else? Focus on each sound and how your mind and body react to each sound.

3. Listen to silence. Find a place where you can have complete quiet. Maybe it’s in your bedroom or your car. Take that moment and see what you notice about your surroundings and yourself.

4. One of my favorite things to do…explore new music! See what rhythms and harmonies help you relax.

Music can be such a wonderful tool to help you relax and be more mindful. Which of the 4 options above will you try today?

Have a wonderful Thursday!
